You’re lucky, according to the United Nations, Canada is one of the countries that accept the most immigrants in the world. Their immigration policy allows them to open doors to 1% of their population annually.

To receive the Canadian residence permit, there is a merit-based system. Each person is different and has a series of strong points that are taken into account when filling the available spots.

There are 6 categories you can fit into to receive your Canadian residency:

Skilled Worker Immigration

To enter this category, your competences are evaluated based on a point system considering elements such as education level, languages, work experience, age, job offer, adaptation, criminal history, demand of your profession, among other criteria of the judge.

Business Immigration

Within this category there are three subcategories: investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed people. Each one has certain requirements:

  • Investors. Must demonstrate investment experience, as well as legally obtained 400,000 CAD  to 800,000 CAD of capital, and willingness to invest 400,000 CAD in the Canadian economy.
  • Entrepreneurs. Experience must be demonstrated by running your own business, or with a large percentage of shares in it. They also ask for a net wealth of  300,000 CAD, as well as being willing to operate or start a new business in Canada, hiring at least one full-time employee for a period of three years, all this before becoming a permanent resident.
  • Self-employed. Demonstrable prior experience is required as well as the intention and ability to establish a business that allows you to employ yourself (at least) and contribute significantly to cultural or sports activities on Canadian territory. Or the purchase or management of a farm.

Provincial nominee

It is a process in which the person’s candidacy is supported from one province in the country. For this, the first step is to contact said province, specifically the provincial immigration representative. Once this is done, they will tell you how you should proceed and the requirements you must meet.

Family Immigration

If you have a relative with a close blood relationship who is a resident of Canada, you can ask them to sponsor you to obtain residency. In this process, that person agrees to support you financially between 3 to 10 years if needed, before the Canadian Government.

International adoption

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can adopt children from other countries. It is a process that can take years, but it is worth knowing that this option also exists.

Applying for a residence in Canada requires meeting some criteria.

Of the 100 points of the application, candidates must have 67 points to be taken into account. For this, 6 criteria are used which we will detail below:

1. Education

This section will give you a maximum of 25 points. The highest score is given to doctorates. For the review of this aspect, a non-government (neutral) entity evaluates foreign degrees to determine their equivalence in Canadian degrees.

2. Language

This criterion requires a minimum of 16 points and can reach a maximum of 28 points. To fulfill this category you must have an intermediate level of one of the official languages of Canada: English or French.

Passing the intermediate proficiency test gives you those 16 points. The fact of having a higher level in the language allows you to obtain up to 24 points, however mastering both languages only favors you in a margin of 4 points, up to 28.

So perfecting your English in Canada and having certifications will be of great help at this point in your evaluation.

3. Work experience

You will be able to obtain between 9 and 15 points for this factor, you can score from having a year of demonstrable work experience. Having studied a CO-OP program in Canada with your student visa can help you in this regard.

4. Age

If you are between 18 and 35 years old, you will get a score of 12 points. Every year over 35 will take points away. When reaching the age of 47, this category will no longer give you points.

5. Arranged employment

It can give you up to 10 additional points, but the employer must demonstrate that hiring a foreign worker for the position will have a neutral or positive impact on the Canadian labor market.

This allows the skilled worker to quickly start working for the Canadian employer.

6. Adaptability

This is based on the individual’s experience or his/her spouse, in Canada. Give up to 10 points based on work experience or studies done in Canadian territory.
